Snowy Sahuary

I designed this little sahuaro cacti a few months ago. The cacti body is painted batting. I didn't have the correct green for the sahuaro, so I mixed acrylic paint and painted the batting. I really liked the resulting fabric with a wonderful texture and the perfect color. I drew my cacti shaped pattern and cut the front and back from the painted batting. I then stitched the spines with my sewing machine. I used a decorative stitch and silver thread. I then cut out the mouth and added brown fabric with a reverse applique technique. The snow is white novelty yarns that were attached with my embellishing machine. The two pieces were stitched together with wrong sides together. Sahuary was stuffed with batting and a base of painted batting was added. Buttons were added for eyes. Last a chili pepper necklace was placed around his neck. I've very fond of my Snowy Sahuary. He will be added to my Christmas collection.

Felt Like Summer Felted Postcard

This is my "Felt Like Summer" postcard for a trade in FAT. Fiber Art Traders. This wonderful group has had a felted postcard trade for each season of 2009. I wasn't sure I would be able to participate in the summer trade due to vacations and other commitments but I made it!

The card is felted onto a Peltex base with my Huskystar ER10. Card incorporates felted sari ribbon (beach), decorative yarns (ocean), and wool fibers (sun and sky). Card has been embellished with Angelica fibers, diamond Stickles, beads, and shells. I'm quite pleased with the results. A fun project.

Giving Tree Leaf

These are machine felted "Giving Tree Leaves" for a swap on Fiber Art Traders (FAT). The leaves are made from two layers of Ecospun felt. The felt is made from recycled plastic bottles.

The veins on the leaf are made from wool fibers. Embellishment is Sari Ribbon. All are felted with my Huskystar ER10. A 1/4" eyelet was added and more Sari Ribbon attached. It will be interesting to see the leaves I receive in the swap.

The ER10 worked great on this project. I may make a fabric postcard using similar techniques.

Felting Part Three

Here is an example of organza that has been texturized with the Huskystar ER10. I have tried to show the difference between the texturized part and the original piece of organza. This didn't take long and I really like the texturized organza. I can see many uses for this fabric. One possiblity would be fabric flowers. I plan to use this as a background for another felted piece.

Felting with Huskystar ER 10

I set some time aside today to experiment with my new felting machine. I purchased the machine in March and have used it only a couple of times. I have been inspired by some of the lovely pictures on blogs to get busy with needle felting. The first step was to felted fabric scraps to a piece of black felt with the machine. The next step was to add yarns and felt those onto the the top of fabric. Next post I will show adding flowers cut from floral fabric.
