Scrappity-Do-Dah Quilt

This is a Scrappity-Do-Dah quilt top that I made for my sister.  She had wanted me to make a quilt for her and I finally selected a pattern.  I wanted to use up the fabrics in my stash.  I found this scrappy quilt pattern and set out to make the quilt top.  There was lots of cutting, trimming, and squaring up in this design.

Here is another view of the top.  I plan to stitch in the ditch along the  sashing and then add a center medallion to the center where the four triangles meet.  I will use my Janome 12000 quilting program to do the medallions.  It will take awhile but it is to be a Christmas present.  My sister has seen the quilt top and would be happy to have an early Christmas gift!!! She will display it on the bed in her guest room.  The bed is white (a vintage bed that belonged to our mom and dad) so the quilt will look very nice.

The Butterfly Room

My son's family recently moved into a new home (new to them).  Papa told each girl that he would paint their rooms before they moved in.  Mema (that's me) took the two GDs shopping at Hobby Lobby for fabric.  Youngest decided she wanted butterflies as the theme for her room.  Each girl was to pick out fabric for Mema to make something and one item for their room.  Here is the fabric for the Butterfly room.

This is what we made from the fabric.

Here is the item she selected that day.

The next week we selected paint color and craft project for the rooms.  She selected a beautiful pink color - Champagne Elegance at Home Depot.  Her craft project was this caterpillar made from scrapbook papers from Michael's.  The color of wall if off in the photo but you can still see the lovely caterpillar.

We also painted her letters from her old room and replaced a flower with a butterfly on the R.

She has been back to Hobby Lobby with her mom and purchased a flower wall hanging that matches the butterfly.  She decided to keep the original sheers in her room.  They are lime green and purple.  She is still adding the finishing touches.  I will post a photo of the completed room at a later date.  Next up the Tween Bedroom.

Fabric Postcards and Pink Saturday

As I was browsing through my files this week.  I discovered my Fabric Postcards and thought they would make a great Pink Saturday post.  Each of these fabric postcards was mailed through the USPS.  Some I place in a plastic sleeve purchased from Walmart, put a first class stamp on them, and drop in the mailbox.  I do reinforce the edges with clear shipping tape.  I have never had a problem.  If they have thick embellishments, then I put them in a padded envelope and mail at the PO.

Each card above represents a different technique (from top to bottom):  machine embroidery and enclosures;
fused applique silhouette and stamping; needlefelted fibers and angelina;  needlefelted fabric pieces and yarns; and paper piecing and stamping.

I hope you have enjoyed my little "Fabric Postcard" show.  For other Pink Saturday posts visit Beverly at How Sweet the Sound.

Happy Pink Saturday (the last for 2010)

We have been asked "What will we be going Christmas day?"  We will begin the day with a special family brunch with my DH and son and his family.  The table is set.  I decided to use my vintage Disney posters of Christmas in various countries as placemats this year.  I ordered these free educational posters from Sears in 1974 and gave them to my mother who was an elementary teacher.  She had them laminated and used them in her classroom.  After her death, we were going through her teaching things and I found these posters.  I was so excited to find them and now I use them as placemats at Christmas.  The granddaughters love to look at them and talk about traditions in other countries.  There are 12 in the set and 6 are on the table for brunch.  Below are a few closeups of the posters.

For our brunch I will make one of my son's favorite dishes, Green Chili Casserole.  I blogged about the casserole last year and posted the recipe here

Merry Christmas.

In Search of the Color PInk

I found these lovely roses in my neighbor's yard.  He has three rose bushes along the picket fence that divides our properties.  The bushes were tended lovingly by his wife.  She passed away and number of years ago and they aren't nearly as beautiful as when she took care of them.  Here are roses from each of the bushes.

These lovely mums are in my other nieghbor's yard.  She has the most lovely mums growing on the side of her house.  I think these qualify as pink.

The flowers above are from my yard.   The rose is what my mother called "Old Time Rose".  The bush has been in the yard since the house was built in the 1950's.  They are very delicate and don't last long when you cut them and put them in a vase.   The other flowers washed in with irrigation years ago and my father decided to let it grow up near the house.  (He usually mowed everything that wasn't in a flower bed.)  You must have guessed that the home belonged to my parents.  We decided to down size and move into the old neighborhood in 2005.  We love it here. It's a neighborhood where we have front porches and leave the light on at night.  Our neighborhood (West Clark) was recently listed in the National Historic Registery.  Such a great place to live.

Hope you have enjoyed this Pink tour of our neighborhood.   Weather has been lovely here in the desert Southwest but we are scheduled to cool down this weekend with possible rain.

Thanks for visiting my Pink Saturday post and thanks to Beverly at How Sweet the Sound for hostessing the event.

It's Pink Saturday

Little girls in Pink Dresses

For Pink Saturday I am sharing some of my vintage dress patterns.  Each features a little girl's dress in pink. I love the images on these old pattern envelopes.  It's hard to resist then when I see then in the thrift stores.  I have a collection of vintage patterns that my sister and I use in our craft projects.  Our most recent project is our Family in Fabric book.  You can see one of the pages here.  I have compiled the items for three more pages and hope to work on them this weekend.

Thanks to Beverly at How Sweet the Sound for organizing Pink Saturday.  Check her blog for a list of participants in this weeks Pink Saturday.

Ripples and Stripes

Happy Pink Saturday

I'm back for Pink Saturday after a short vacation.  For this week I have decided to share two of my current projects.  The first is a ripple afghan.  The second is the back of my March table runner from the Fresh and Fancy table runner of the month.  I had hoped to have the top completed also but we had a family cookout in our backyard on Friday.  I was busy with preparations and didn't quite finish the top so I decided to share the pattern picture with you.

I posted my January table runner earlier in the week.  The table runner series is by Cotton Way.  I purchased the kits from Fat Quarter.com.  So far I'm very impressed with the kits I have received.  The fabrics are from Moda.  The fabric for the table runner above is Moda's Spring Fever.  Don't you just love all the spring colors (especially the pinks).

Happy Pink Saturday to all.  To see more Pink Saturday blogs check out Beverly's How Sweet the Sound

Easter quilting

HAPPY PINK SATURDAY

This week we are posting Easter Pink and Yellow.  I hope the oranges qualify as yellow (after all orange is yellow + red)

I made these little Easter quilts last year and decided to share them with you.  The pattern for the Easter Bunny Quilt was in a quilting magazine last spring.  I don't remember which one.  The bunnies and tails are applique.  I purchased the fabric at Granny's Attic.  Granny's was my favorite quilt store in Kentucky but went out of business last summer.  Another victim of the economy.

The quilted egg is made of fabric strips from my stash.  I used the strip quilting method.  I also made the carrot tablerunner with the same method.  It's fun to get out the Easter quilts and use then during the Easter season.  Happy Quilting and Happy Pink Saturday.

For more Easter Pinks check out the list on Beverly's How Sweet the Sound.  On BJ's Sweet Nothings you will  find wonderful pink goodies (and some great looking food).  Enjoy your visit.

Beautiful Pink Flowers - Homer Laughlin Empire Green

Happy Pink Saturday

Look what I found at the thrift store this week.  Aren't they lovely.  They are Homer Laughin's Empire Green pattern.  When I saw the three pieces sitting there, I knew I wanted them.  I then checked the prices and I "double knew" I had to have them.  The large oval platter was 99 cents.  The vegetable bowl was $2.99 and the square plate was 69 cents.  Less than $ 5.00 for all five pieces.  They are in excellent condition.  I used the platter for fruit just last evening.  I think they will make great serving dishes.  I found the oval platter and serving bowl on Replacements, Ltd.  The Round Veggie Bowl was listed for $36.99 and the oval serving platter for $33.99.  I realize no one probably pays their prices but it did make me smile!

I thought the lovely pink flowers in the center of the dishes was just the thing for my Pink Saturday post this week.  Hope you enjoy looking at these beauties.  The quilt in the background was a gift from my friend, Susan.  The lovely fabrics just "sings" Springtime.  Hope you are experiencing Spring weather this lovely weekend.

For more Pink Saturday posts check out the list on Beverly's How Sweet the Sound.  Then "hop" on over to the Rose Chinz Cottage where you will find the most lovely things in pink.  There are flowers, tea cups, and lots more pinks.

Vintage Deer Planters

Welcome to Pink Saturday.   I have decided to share some of my vintage deer planters this week.  A number of years ago my sister gave me a vintage duck planter for my birthday.  After that first planter, I began searching for other vintage planters with an animal theme.  My DH is a hunter and fisherman and I thought this would be a great way to include his interests into my "collecting".  I began finding vintage deer planters and my collection started to grow.  I presently have over 100 of the vintage planters.  The majority are deer and birds.  Many of the deer are displayed in our bedroom as shown here.  Most are in our home here in Arizona but some at our vacation home in Kentucky.  I also have a number of lamps and t.v. lamps in my collection.

Today I'm showing the deer on the shelf above our bed.  The furniture in our bedroom was custom designed to display my collection of deer and bird planters.  I selected one of the pink planters to feature in this post.  Hope you enjoy seeing these.

Thanks to Beverly  over at How Sweet the Sound.  Check out her blog to find a list of Pink Saturday participants this week.

Convergence Quilt

Welcome to Pink Saturday hosted by Beverly at How Sweet the Sound.  Check out her blog for a list of all participants this week.  Also I'd like to recommend Barb at Dog Mom Diva.  Pay her blog a visit and check out her Pink Saturday Posts.

This week I've decided to feature one of my Convergence Quilts.  The Convergence Quilt was designed by quilter, Ricky Tims.

Isn't this fabric great.  The fabric was purchased a great little quilt shop in Kentucky, Granny's Attic.  Unfortunately Granny's was a victim of the economy and closed it doors last summer.  I was forturnate to purchase a large selection of fabric prior to the store's closing.

I just love the look of a convergence quilt.  I have embellished the quilt by adding appliques of flower petals and leaves to the outer edge of the quilt.  You can see this in the photo above.  I took flower petals and leaves and made it appear that the flower was cascading onto the quilt center from the border.  I'm using the same technique on a Nine Patch Pizzaz that I'm currently quilting.  I love to quilt and hope you enjoy seeing one of my creations.  Happy Pink Saturday.

A Valentine for Teacher

Don't you just love these little vintage Valentines.  I found them in at a Flea Market.  They were from Mrs. Howell's class and were  in a plastic bag.  The bag included one signed by Mrs. Howell and 23 Valentines from students.

Today I am sharing some of the Pink ones.  These cards are signed by Randall, James, Judy, Bobby, and Kathy.   They bring back memories of grade school days and exchanging Valentines.  It was so much fun to complete the little envelopes and sign my name on the back of each card.  I can remember reading the sentiments to make sure that everyone got the perfect card.  I'm sure Randall, James, Judy, Bobby, and Kathy did the same thing.

Wish I had kept at least one of those wonderful boxes my mom helped me make from a shoe box.  Wonder if students still make boxes and exchange Valentines?  Hope you have similar pleasant memories of Valentine Days past.

Thanks for joining me for Pink Saturday.  For more Pink posts check out the list on Beverly's How Sweet the Sound.    To see more lovely Pinks check out Some Place in Thyme.

Pink Saturday

Pink Saturday in my Studio

For this week's Pink Saturday post, I will show you a pink shelf in my studio.  The walls of my studio are pale pink with pale green accent wall.  I love the colors.  They remind me of springtime.  I love to create here.  This shelf began it's life as one of my thrifted items.  I think it originally was designed for a bathroom.  When I found it, it had dark wood stain and the top compartment had a mirrored door.  I could see possibilities and purchased it.  My DH removed the ugly mirrored door and the pressed wood back panel.  I then painted it this lovely pink.  I use the shelf for ribbon and to display treasured items.

These old wooden spools on a vintage spool holder were a gift from my California Sister.

This cute little pin cushion is a gift from my Arizona sister.  I use it to hold sewing machine needles.

This candle and holder were gifts from my beautiful granddaughters.  It is part of a set that also included a lovely heart shaped wire basket.  The basket sits on my desk and holds ATCs.

I found this lovely lady at the thrift store for 75 cents.  She is ceramic and was the perfect color for my studio.  I think she is handpainted.

Tag book made at a wonderful little scrapbook store Devine Memories.  They recently closed.

This is one of my favorite altered books.  I made it at a class at Mystic Paper (a lovely scrapbook store in downtown Mesa).  The class was taught by Susan Johnson.  Susan is a local artist and I love her classes.  I was lucky enough to have Susan design an altered book for my 60th birthday party.

Hope you enjoyed seeing my Pink Shelf and it's treasures.

For more Pink Saturday post visit Beverly's How Sweet the Sound.  Beverly is the hostess for Pink Saturday. I'm sure you will enjoy her  blog.  You will also want to visit the Bunny Cottage to see a great pink collection and a prayer for Haiti and it's people.
